ISO 9001 Objects, Outputs, Products and Services

What do these terms mean in ISO 9001:2015?

Products and services are both outputs and objects of processes. The result of a process is the output and the output is an object. Objects can be material, immaterial or imagined such as the product produced or the service provided. Products are typically tangible whereas services are typically intangible (ISO 9000:2015 Quality Management System – Fundamentals and Vocabulary).

For example, the output of a production process may include the product produced and the final inspection report. Performing the final inspection may also be considered a service you are providing your customer. The product, report, service of performing the final inspection, your customer, and the process itself are also all considered objects of the production process.

These terms are used repeatedly throughout the ISO 9001 standard. Understanding what these terms mean will help you to interpret the requirements.
